Bayo Onanuga, born on June 20, 1957, in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria, had a keen interest in journalism from an early age. He attended the University of Lagos, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication. His education at the prestigious institution laid the foundation for his future career in media and journalism.
Bayo Onanuga currently holds the position of special Adviser on Information and Technology to President Bola Tinubu. He was appointed for this role on October 13, 2023, by the current Nigerian president. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the administration’s communication strategies and managing the dissemination of information to the public.
Onanuga’s professional career began in the 1980s when he joined the staff of the National Concord newspaper. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the most respected journalists in Nigeria. In 1992, he co-founded TheNEWS magazine, a publication known for its fearless investigative journalism and commitment to exposing corruption and abuse of power in Nigeria. His work with TheNEWS established him as a prominent figure in the fight for press freedom and good governance in Nigeria.
Bayo Onanuga has also ventured into the political arena. He served as the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), where he played a crucial role in modernizing and expanding the agency’s operations. Under his leadership, NAN became a more efficient and reliable source of news for Nigerians and the international community. Onanuga continues to be an influential voice in Nigerian media and politics, advocating for press freedom and transparency in governance.
